The Exquisite Hour
EBBA with Agüita, Andrew Corrigan, Oliver Ellmers and Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi

25 November – 2 December, 2026

The exhibition takes its name from the lyric poem L’heure Exquise (The Exquisite Hour) written by the poet Paul Verlaine and first published in his collection La Bonne Chanson in 1870. The poem was later used by the composer Reynaldo Hahn for his melody, also titled L’heure Exquise, composed between 1887 and 1890.

The poem describes the moment when night falls and two people come together to witness a vast and tender calm descend from a sky made iridescent by the moon.

Act I

In August 2026, EBBA set an installation within a forest clearing in Tilburg, Netherlands. Created for Draaimolen Festival, the structure comprised three elements: a draped fabric canopy hung amongst the forest’s trees; a platform below, vibrating with low, felt frequencies; and a halo of light above, which flickered in response. Together, these elements invited festival-goers to lie down, look up and rest. In doing so, it created an interruption to the natural rhythms of the forest – its sounds, light and tempo – through a moment of collective pause.

Act II

Set within ALL PROJECTS gallery, The Exquisite Hour is a re-enactment of this collective pause, creating new moments for gathering: around a stage, set by EBBA; around light, with technical directors Oliver Ellmers and Andrew Corrigan; around sound, with singer, songwriter and composer Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi; around a shared meal, with food curators Agüita and chef Pablo Britton.

EBBA is an architecture and design practice, making quietly progressive buildings, places, objects and furniture through an investigative and hands-on approach. Founded by architect and designer Benni Allan, the practice works across cultural spaces, galleries, large and small dwellings and retail, creating spaces that reflect particular poetic and material qualities. Current projects include the refurbishment of the Studio Voltaire’s entrance space and a Barbican exhibition opening in 2027.

The practice initiated ALL PROJECTS in February 2026 in response to the growing precarity of community-based cultural spaces in London. In line with EBBA's own practice, ALL PROJECTS operates at the intersection of art, architecture, design, fashion and music as a site for collaborative gestures.

Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi
